Justin Langer has been named the new head coach of Australia across all three formats of the game.

Langer takes over on a four-year deal following the departure of Darren Lehmann, who resigned in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal which engulfed the Australia team earlier this year.

The 47-year-old Langer played 105 Tests as a top-order batsman, scoring 23 centuries, and was previously assistant coach with Australia before becoming senior coach of Western Australia and Big Bash side Perth Scorchers in 2012.

He said: "It is humbling to be appointed as coach of the Australian men's cricket team.

"I am very excited about the scope I now have to coach the country that supported me so much in my cricketing career.

"There will be some significant challenges ahead for our group, but there is a wealth of talent in Australian cricket that I know will do us all proud."

Lehmann stepped down after the ball-tampering scandal during the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town, which led to the suspensions of skipper Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner and opening batsman Cameron Bancroft.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland is confident Langer is the right man to see Australia through a four-year period which will include two Ashes series, a World Cup and a World Twenty20 tournament.

Sutherland said: "We firmly believe Justin is the right person to lead this team and have huge confidence in what he will bring to the role.

"Justin's work ethic, leadership and values are among his strongest attributes and he is widely respected across the global cricket community."
