They looked on course for a three-day shellacking after Joe Root was dismissed lbw for 68 on day three - at that point, the hosts were 110-6 and still 69 runs from making Pakistan bat again.

Step forward two men with Somerset connections in Jos Buttler (66no) and Dom Bess (55no), who put on an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 125 to lift England into a 56-run lead in the capital.

Former Taunton favourite Buttler - who now plays his county cricket at Lancashire - notched his seventh Test fifty on recall, with Bess, 20, hitting his first on his England and Lord's debut shortly before stumps and ending the day by driving the final ball, bowled by Mohammad Amir, for four.

Root also completed his 40th Test half-century but the five other England batsmen seen on Saturday mustered just 31 runs between them. Yikes!
