MOMENT OF THE DAY

The key moment, undoubtedly, was the wicket of Jos Buttler to only the seventh ball of the day. The second new ball - due after the first two overs of play - was seen to be pivotal in Pakistan's search for early wickets and to break Buttler and Dom Bess' stirring century stand from the previous evening. They would not need to wait that long, as Mohammad Abbas trapped Buttler lbw for 67 in the second over, and England were soon bowled out within 27 minutes of play.

WHAT THEY SAID

ENGLAND CAPTAIN, JOE ROOT: "It's not good enough. We were outperformed in all three departments. We did some really good work leading into this game and we just didn't follow through with that. Pakistan's bowlers exploited the conditions but we also played some poor shots. [I don't regret batting first] - it did a bit more than we expected but if you look at the wicket today, it's only the morning of day four and the pitch has been up and down. If we got nearer 250, it is going to be a different game. We have to be better."

Joe Root discusses why England struggled against Pakistan despite the home conditions

PAKISTAN CAPTAIN, SARFRAZ AHMED: "I am very proud of my team - the young players are producing their talent and are a big part of my team. We have a good bowling side, while we have worked really hard on our catching after dropping a few [against Ireland]. It has been fantastic here."

NASSER HUSSAIN: "The time for 'gently, gently' has gone - it's now the time for 'it's not good enough'. It hasn't been good enough for quite some time - it wasn't good enough in the Ashes and it hasn't been good enough here against Pakistan'. Root has to go hard at his players."

David Gower is joined by Nasser Hussain and Sir Ian Botham to dissect England's performance against Pakistan in the first Test at Lord's

SIR IAN BOTHAM: "There is no way England should perform like that at home, there is no excuse. Pakistan haven't done anything special - they have done the basics, bowled line and length, put a price on their wickets and caught better than England. It was wimpish to watch from England - it was like schoolboys, there was no fight."

STAT OF THE DAY
