The Hundred: Ryana MacDonald-Gay takes four wickets as Manchester Super Giants claim dominant win over London Spirit

Ryana MacDonald-Gay took four wickets as Manchester Super Giants surged to a dominant seven-wicket victory over London Spirit at Lord's.

Meg Lanning's side showcased why they are one of the teams to watch in The Hundred this year, bowling the hosts out for 80 with nine deliveries to spare, before needing only 40 minutes to surpass that total.

"That was a mega start from our girls," England spinner Sophie Ecclestone said. "I feel like we set up really well. The pitch was doing a bit and we didn't really miss. It was spinning and then it was variable bounce.

"We've not spent much time together and I feel like a lot of teams have said that, but watching Grace Ballinger up front and obviously what Ryana MacDonald-Gay did was amazing."

Spirit were put in to bat, but struggled early on against the Super Giants' dominant bowling attack, with Grace Harris (4) and Amy Jones (0) dismissed inside the first eight deliveries by Grace Ballinger and Maitlan Brown.

Wickets came in clusters, with player-of-the-match MacDonald-Gay snaring Marie Kelly, who top-edged a ball out to Paige Scholfield at cover.

Three deliveries later, MacDonald-Gay and Lanning combined to take the crucial wicket of South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, who had brought up a score of 17 off 12.

Spirit found themselves struggling at 23-4, with Ecclestone bowling a full length outside off to remove West Indies batter Deandra Dottin for four.

England's vice-captain Charlie Dean was run out by Lanning and Richa Ghosh for 14, before MacDonald-Gay struck again, hitting Nadine de Klerk's stumps, before forcing Katie George to edge a ball behind to Ghosh.

"The bowlers at the top really set up the game for us, taking the early wickets and I felt coming in and sticking to my plan worked really well," MacDonald-Gay said.

"We stuck to our plan and we nailed the basics and we did it really well. I felt in pretty good rhythm. Pretty confident.

"Coming into this game, we were really clear and just wanted to execute our basics and I think we did that."

The Super Giants continued to keep their feet on the gas pedal in their reply, with Smriti Mandhana (17) and Lanning (21) building a partnership of 33 off 28 deliveries, before Kapp trapped the India batter lbw.

Kapp had another wicket the following ball, hitting Grace Scrivens' stumps to dismiss the 22-year-old for a golden duck, before she eventually removed Lanning later in the innings.

Scholfield (22no) and Ghosh (15no) then stood firm, though, to seal a seven-wicket win and send the Super Giants to the top of The Hundred table on net run-rate.
