Middlesex beat Sussex in thriller

Nick Gubbins scored 141 for Middlesex as they beat Sussex by three runs under Duckworth Lewis rules in their Royal London One-Day Cup match

Dawid Malan and Nick Gubbins both smashed centuries as Middlesex beat Sussex by three runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method at the County Ground in the Royal London One Day Cup.

Malan hit 13 boundaries in his knock of 131 while Gubbins struck nine boundaries and seven sixes in his innings of 141.

The visitors racked up 367-6 in their 50 overs with the in-form John Simpson making a quick-fire 50 off 25 balls.

In reply, the hosts threatened to reach their revised target of 309 with Australian George Bailey reaching a swashbuckling century.

They took it down to the final over and needed nine runs off three balls but Bailey was run out for 112.

The Australian was supported by 72 from Luke Wright, who was brilliantly caught on the boundary by Neil Dexter, but Sussex ran out of time and finished on 305-9.

Dexter was the pick of the home side’s bowlers with 3-46 while Pakistan seamer Junaid Khan took 2-59.

The result means Middlesex are up to fifth place in Group B while Sussex remain bottom.

Elsewhere, Jonathan Trott hit an unbeaten 73 to guide Warwickshire to a nine wicket win over Glamorgan at Edgbaston.

The former England batsman put on a 157-run partnership with Varun Chopra who finished on 80 not out.

Trott hit eight boundaries while Chopra smashed seven fours and a six as they recovered from losing William Porterfield for 22.

The home side coasted to victory with 71 balls remaining in their chase of 179.

Glamorgan were skittled out thanks to five wickets from Oliver Hannon-Dalby and three from Josh Poysden. William Bragg top scored for the visitors with 45.

The win for the Midlands club sees them move ahead of Glamorgan into sixth place in Group B.
