James Anderson told Ian Ward he has apologised to the umpires for his behaviour after a frustrating day

James Anderson has apologised for his "out of order" exchanges with the umpires as England endured a taxing day two against Pakistan at Edgbaston.

Anderson was warned twice for running on the pitch and his frustrations were evident as he spoke to on-field officials Bruce Oxenford and Joel Wilson.

England closed the day with a lead of just 40, after Azhar Ali (139) and Sami Aslam (82) helped Pakistan - thrashed by 330 runs in the second Test in Manchester - reach 257-3.

"I probably got a little bit out of order at one point with the umpires," Anderson told Sky Sports. "I've apologised to both of them for my behaviour.

"I'm competitive and that's the way I play the game - I want to try and get wickets and that competitiveness has helped me in the past.

"I also want to play within the spirit of the game, though, and I know I was out of order with the way I behaved."

Sky Sports expert and former England batsman Mark Butcher added: "Anderson was warned quite rightly, so he had no right to have a go at the umpires. He has apologised, so let's hope his inevitable fine gets halved!"
