Ben Stokes bagged his first wicket for Canterbury before being run out for a duck as his side suffered a third straight defeat in the Ford Trophy.

Stokes caught Northern Districts' top-scorer Anton Devcich (59) off his own bowling as the visitors were dismissed for 274 at Hagley Oval.

However, the 26-year-old faced just one ball while batting after a mix-up with Michael Pollard, Stokes run out from mid-on after hesitating once Pollard called him through for an attempted single.

Canterbury went on to lose by 43 runs after slipping to 231 all out in 46.3 overs, with Pollard's 119 from 134 balls coming in vain.

Stokes remains suspended from international duty as he waits to learn whether he will be charged following his arrest in Bristol in September on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm.

The all-rounder has been provisionally named in England's ODI squad for the five-match series in Australia in January.

Speaking about Stokes' potential return to international cricket, England head coach Trevor Bayliss said: "Whenever he comes back it's going to be a bit of a circus for sure.

"Whether it's any more of a circus than it's already been, it's hard to say. If it happens, let's just get on with it and take it on the chin."
