Usman Khawaja will miss Australia's next two Test matches with a hamstring strain that could sideline him for more than a month.
Khawaja was recalled at the start of the series against New Zealand and had scored centuries in his last two innings, but he was hurt while fielding at the WACA on Saturday.
The 28-year-old left-hander, who had just returned from more than two years in the Test wilderness, pulled up while chasing a ball to the boundary.
Cricket Australia confirmed on Sunday the Pakistan-born batsman would miss the final match of the New Zealand series in Adelaide, which will be the first day-night Test, and the opening Test against West Indies in Hobart next month.
"Usman suffered a left hamstring injury in the field yesterday afternoon and underwent scans in Perth this morning," team physiotherapist David Beakley said in a news release.
"The scans have indicated a moderate hamstring muscle strain which means it is likely he will be unavailable for the next two Test matches in Adelaide and Hobart."
The series against the West Indies starts in Tasmania on December 10, but Khawaja could be back for the start of the second Test on Boxing Day at the MCG.
Khawaja missed much of last summer with a knee injury and his absence from the side will be a big blow to Australia, who again have to fill their troublesome No 3 berth.
His new injury setback may pave the way for a test call-up for one of the Western Australian duo of Shaun Marsh or Cameron Bancroft.
