Any concerns over the knee problem that had threatened to rule Stokes out of the game were soon eased as he smashed 11 fours and three sixes in his 79-ball knock of 101 with England closing on 330-6.

However, South Africa will feel aggrieved that the all-rounder was given the opportunity to reach three figures after he was dropped off each of his first two balls - two of six dropped catches in the innings.

Stokes, after that extremely sticky start, powered his way to a century before Maharaj, the unlucky bowler at the start of Stokes' knock, finally got his man.

With Stokes gone, it fell to Jos Buttler to keep the pressure on the Proteas attack and he did just that, finishing unbeaten on 65 from 53 balls. Moeen Ali also played his part, caught from the final ball of the innings after thumping 33 from 19 balls.

Half-centuries from Quinton de Kock (98), David Miller (71no) and AB de Villiers (52), and some late big hitting from Chris Morris, took South Africa to the brink of a series-levelling victory.
