Ashes 2015: Bob Willis thinks Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance will continue to struggle against Australia

Image: Adam Lyth scored just seven runs in two innings at Lord's

Sky Sports expert Bob Willis had harsh words for some of the England batsmen after the hosts were skittled out for just 103 to lose the second Investec Ashes Test at Lord's by 405 runs, inside four days.

On a pitch on which Australia managed totals of 566-8 declared and 254-2 declared, England were bowled out for 312 and 103.

And Sunday's second innings effort was particularly disappointing as, far from batting the match out for a draw, England failed to come close to taking it into a fifth day, capitulating in just 37 overs.

Opener Adam Lyth made 0 and seven in the match, and was caught behind off Mitchell Starc on both occasions.

Willis said: "It's a repeat and a repeat and a repeat and a repeat.

To my eye, there is no way that Lyth and Ballance are going to get runs against this Australian attack this summer.

"The Australians know how to get Adam Lyth out and they have done it four times in this series. The New Zealanders did it as well.

"He has got the problem Alastair Cook had outside off stump when he was a young player. Australia find a batsman's weakness and go for the kill every time."

Gary Ballance also endured a disappointing match, scoring 23 and 14, and Willis said: "I don’t think you can play Test cricket batting within the popping crease all the time and, if he is not getting bowled out, he is wanting to feel bat on ball."

Sir Ian Botham and Shane Warne pick their England team to face Australia in the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston

And Willis thinks Ian Bell is now playing for his place at Edgbaston after he only managed scores of one and 11 in the Lord's drubbing.

Willis said: "This lack of form has gone on for a long while and I really believe that Edgbaston may be the last chance saloon for Ian Bell.

"You can't keep picking a player because he used to score you runs."

The third Test starts on 29 July and Willis thinks England should drop Lyth and Ballance.

Nasser Hussain believes that Edgbaston could be last-chance saloon for some of the England players

"I would make changes," he said. "To my eye, there is no way that Lyth and Ballance are going to get runs against this Australian attack this summer.

"Australia bowl so well against left-handers and I would be looking to replace them with two right-handed batsmen at the top of the order.

"I don't think it will happen. I think the selectors will give this line-up another chance but I think if they keep this side, they will lose at Edgbaston."

Willis says he thinks Alex Hales of Nottinghamshire should replace Lyth at the top of the order and he also gave the @SkyCricket Twitter feed his marks out of 10 for the England side at Lord's. They do not make pretty reading!
