Team Sky have bolstered their sprint options by signing up-and-coming Dutch rider Danny van Poppel.

The 22-year-old will join the British squad on a two-year contract from Trek Factory Racing on January 1.

Van Poppel made a major breakthrough in his career earlier this month by winning a stage of the Vuelta a Espana, which was his sixth professional victory.

He told teamsky.com: "I am about to complete my third year as a professional and feel ready to take my career to the next stage. I grabbed the opportunity to join Team Sky with both hands.

"With the knowledge and support they are able to offer, I believe I can grow, improve my performances, and support some of the world's best riders on the very biggest stage."

Team Sky principal Sir Dave Brailsford said: "We are excited about Danny. He is only young and burst on to the scene at a very young age - he was one of the youngest riders ever to start the Tour de France [in 2013].

"He won a stage of the Vuelta a Espana recently, which was a terrific victory, but we see him fitting into our classics group and we are excited to have him."
