Vuelta a Espana: Kristian Sbaragli wins as Chris Froome holds firm
Monday 31 August 2015 21:55, UK
Chris Froome stayed eighth and Tom Dumoulin retained the overall lead as Kristian Sbaragli sprinted to victory on stage 10 of the Vuelta a Espana.
Sbaragli (MTN-Qhubeka) picked up his first professional win by holding off a late charge from runner-up and pre-stage favourite John Degenkolb (Giant-Alpecin) in Castellon.
Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin), Froome (Team Sky) and all of the other contenders for overall victory finished safely in the peloton as the top 10 remained unchanged.
It means Dumoulin takes a 57-second lead over second-placed Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) into the race's first rest day on Tuesday, with Esteban Chaves (Orica-GreenEdge) 59 seconds down in third.
Movistar pair Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana both stay 1min 17sec back in sixth and seventh respectively, while Froome remains 1min 18sec adrift of the red jersey.
Sbaragli's win was South African team MTN-Qhubeka's second at a grand tour, after Britain's Steve Cummings gave them their first at last month's Tour de France.
Sbaragli told Eurosport: "It's a dream for me. It's a dream for MTN-Qhubeka. We won a stage of the Tour de France and we won a stage here. It's a victory for all of Africa and all the children. It's not just a team; it's a dream."
The Vuelta continues on Wednesday with a savage, 138km mountain stage from Andorra la Vella to Cortals d'Encamp, which contains six categorised climbs. Follow all the action with our live blog from 2pm BST.
