Alexander Kristoff is the new European Road Race champion after edging out Team Sky's Elia Viviani in a thrilling finish in Denmark.

Kristoff and Viviani were shoulder to shoulder in a sprint in the town of Herning, but it was the Norwegian who got the nod at the end of the 241.2km race.

Viviani complained that he had been squeezed into the barriers by Kristoff, who also won last weekend's RideLondon Classic in a bunch sprint.

But race officials allowed the result to stand after viewing replays and Kristoff will wear the European champion's jersey for the next 12 months.

Moreno Hofland of the Netherlands took third place in the race contested by national teams rather than WorldTour squads.
