Although the world champion ultimately finished comfortably clear at the top of the timesheets, Hamilton was only one of a host of drivers to top the charts as the Red Bull Ring dried out and the lap times tumbled.
When the chequered flag fell, Nico Hulkenberg held provisional pole position for Force India and even after Mercedes' late surge the German will start Sunday's race from a season-best third.
