Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton has a terrible start and drops five places at the beginning of the Italian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton dropped from first to sixth at the beginning of the Italian GP after making a poor start.

The initial phase of the getaway appeared fairly good for the world champion from pole, but as the cars accelerated towards the first turn, he did not have the pace to keep up with Nico Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen, Valtteri Bottas or Daniel Ricciardo.

With the six previous winners of the of the Italian GP all coming from pole, making a good start to the race was key, and the time lost behind the Ferraris and Bottas and Ricciardo in the opening exchanges handed Rosberg a comfortable advantage at the head of the field.

That early advantage proved decisive in the outcome of the race, with Hamilton unable to get back on terms with his team-mate and his title lead has now been cut to just two points.
