Michael Schumacher 'cannot walk', a court is told by family lawyer

Michael Schumacher cannot walk three years after his life-changing skiing accident, a family lawyer has told a German court.

In proceedings against a German magazine, Schumacher's lawyer, Felix Damm, said: "He cannot walk."

The Schumachers are taking action against Bunte after the magazine claimed last December in a front-page exclusive that the 47-year-old was able to walk with the assistance of the medical staff who are providing the seven-times world champion with around-the-clock care.

Schumacher suffered catastrophic head injuries in December 2013 as he holidayed with friends and family in the French Alps. He was placed into a medically-induced coma before being transferred to the Schumachers' family home on the shores of Lake Geneva in September 2014.

The Schumachers have continued to fiercely protect the former Ferrari and Mercedes driver's privacy since his return home, with Damm's statement amounting to rare official comment on the F1 legend's rehabilitation and recovery.

In a statement last year responding to Bunte's report, Sabine Kehm, Schumacher's long-time manager said: "Unfortunately, we are forced by a recent press report to clarify that the assertion that Michael could move again is not true. Such speculation is irresponsible, because given the seriousness of his injuries, his privacy is very important for Michael. Unfortunately they also give false hopes to many involved people."
