Despite being beaten by Lewis Hamilton in America, Nico Rosberg could clinch his first Drivers' Championship this weekend in Mexico.
While Hamilton's victory on Sunday trimmed Rosberg's lead in the title race from 33 to 26 points, the German still holds more than the equivalent of a full race victory in hand over his team-mate.
It means that, with just three races remaining, Rosberg will win the title if he wins this weekend's Mexican GP and Hamilton retires or fails to finish in the points.
In that scenario, Rosberg would be 51 points clear with a maximum of just 50 left available.
Were Rosberg to win and Hamilton was just 10th, Rosberg would also be crowned champion because, although Hamilton could still catch his team-mate on points, Rosberg would be guaranteed to complete the season with more wins - the tie-breaker in the event of two drivers finishing level on points.
A victory in Mexico would be Rosberg's 10th of the year and Hamilton could only finish with nine.
Meanwhile, even if Hamilton were to win all of the remaining races, the feat wouldn't guarantee him retaining the title. Two second-place finishes and a third would be enough for Rosberg to clinch his maiden Drivers' Championship even if Hamilton ended the season with four consecutive victories.
