McLaren's Jenson Button says an announcement will be made about his future in the next few weeks.

Jenson Button has hailed Sebastian Vettel's pole position in Singapore as being the perfect result for F1.

In a crushing and comprehensive end to Mercedes' 2015 dominance, Vettel claimed his first pole in over two years as both Ferrari and Red Bull ripped up the script to demote the Silver Arrows cars of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg to the third row.

"Sebastian did a mega job and this is exactly what the sport needs," Button told Sky Sports F1. "This weekend is very important for F1. You can't take it away from Mercedes because they've done the best job this year but to see them 1.4 seconds off the pace is good for the sport and probably even good for Mercedes because they can see the competition."

Not that Button is likely to be part of the fight for victory on Sunday. "I'll be watching it on the big screen while going around," the McLaren driver joked after qualifying a distant 15th.

A decision on his 2016 future, meanwhile, is expected in the "next couple of weeks".
