New guidelines will be enforced from next year, bringing an end to anchored putting being a legal stroke.
The technique has played a role in numerous major victories in recent years, with Keegan Bradley and Ernie Els among those to have won one of the 'big four' by using anchored putting.
Under Rule 14-1b, from January 1 a player 'must not anchor the club, either "directly" or by use of an anchor point', although players won't be penalised if they play a shot unintentionally.
Former Liverpool defender Alan Hansen, featuring with an anchor putter in this week's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, is one of many to have been misconstrued by the regulations.
