Xander Schauffele wins Greenbrier Classic to claim maiden PGA Tour victory

Xander Schauffele secured a first professional title and maiden PGA Tour victory with a narrow win at the Greenbrier Classic.

The world No 159 birdied the last at White Sulphur Springs to shoot a three-under 67 and set the clubhouse target at 14 under, which was one clear of nearest challenger Robert Streb.

Schauffele, who finished joint-fifth in June's US Open, booked one of four qualification places available for this month's Open at Royal Birkdale for those not already exempt.

Runner-up Streb also claimed a place, with Jamie Lovemark and overnight leader Sebastian Munoz - both finishing in a share of third - taking the other spots.

"I am lost for words. This has changed my life. I need a little time to take it all in," Schauffele said in his post-round interview.

Beginning the day three off the pace, Schauffele rolled in a four-foot birdie at the first and drained a 15-footer at the next to reach the turn in 32.

A blemish at the 11th for Schauffele saw Streb briefly edge ahead with a two-putt birdie at the 12th, only for him to lose his lead by going out of bounds a double-bogeying the next.

Munoz, who has led after the previous three rounds, missed a five-footer to save par at the fourth and cancelled out a close-range birdie at the next with three bogeys in a four-hole stretch.

Schauffele slotted in from 12 feet at the 16th and birdied the last three last to set the target, as Streb picked up a shot at the 14th but failed to find another gain to force a play-off.

Lovemark posted a one-under 69 to join Munoz on 12 under, with Kelly Kraft and Russell Henley a further stroke back and Tony Finau inside the top 10.

Phil Mickelson fired a joint-low round-of-the-day 64 to end the week in the tie for 20th which also included Ryder Cup teammate Patrick Reed, who signed for a closing 67.
