Grayson Murray birdied his final two holes to grab a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Valero Texas Open.
The American fired a five-under 67 in breezy conditions at TPC San Antonio, mixing seven birdies with a sole double-bogey to set a target that couldn't be matched by the afternoon starters.
Billy Horschel and Ryan Moore sit tied-second alongside Keegan Bradley, Chesson Hadley and Matt Atkins, while Sergio Garcia - making his first appearance since missing the cut at the Masters - struggled to a two-over 74.
"I hit the ball really well and that gave myself lots of opportunities," Murray told Sky Sports. "It's always nice to get off to a start like that in tough conditions."
Murray birdied his opening two holes and rolled in a five-footer at the fifth, before recovering from a double-bogey at the seventh to convert long-range efforts at the 11th and 13th.
The 24-year-old drove the par-four 17th green on his way to a two-putt birdie and added another from 10 feet at the last to move top of the leaderboard.
Moore and Horschel both made bogey-free starts to the week, as Bradley birdied three of his opening five holes and Hadley posted a final-hole gain to also get to four under.
Brandt Snedeker and Zach Johnson are part of the group three off the pace, with Matt Kuchar on one under and defending champion Kevin Chappell opening with a level-par 72.
