Castro piled up 10 birdies in a flawless round of 62 at the Country Club of Jackson, although a handful of players were unable to complete their round with conditions too dark to continue.

The American kick-started his round with four successive birdies from the 12th - having started on the 10th - and he carded an opening nine 31 thanks to another shot picked up at the 17th.

He moved to seven under with birdies at the third and fourth and managed another birdie streak before the end of his round, picking up further shots at the sixth, seventh and eighth holes before closing with a par.

"It was a solid round all 18 holes," Castro said. "I made a lot of putts but they were all in that eight to 10-foot range so not gimmes but a lot of good looks.

"I played well for a couple of weeks during the Web.Com Tour finals and the Frys.Com Open. In Vegas I also played solid I just didn't get any results out of it, so hopefully I'm just trying to turn the corner here."

Castro claimed top spot from long-time leader Aaron Baddeley, who made the early running with a round of 64. The Australian also avoided any bogeys, making six birdies and chipping in from off the green for an eagle at the short par-four 15th.

"Overall, I'm very pleased and feeling very comfortable with where I'm at, Baddeley said, who was joined on eight under by Bryce Molder after the American completed his front-nine in only 30 strokes.

Brian Davis was another man to hole his approach to the 15th for eagle, and that helped him complete a seven-under round of 64, leaving him tied for fourth with Canada's Adam Hadwin.

Of the nine players yet to finish their first round, the best placed is South Africa's Tyrone van Aswegen on five under with three holes remaining. He will be back at 7.30am local time on Friday to complete his round.
