World No 1 Jordan Spieth has revealed his confidence of securing more major titles ahead of his Australian Open defence this week.

Spieth returns Sydney 12 months after his blistering final-round - a course-record 63 - that kick-started a rich vein of form.

The 22-year-old went on to win the following week's Hero World Challenge before capturing the Masters and US Open titles along with the Valspar Championship, a second John Deere Classic and the year-ending Tour Championship in the 2015 season.

Spieth will tee up on Thursday looking to become the first non-Australian born player to win the coveted Stonehaven Trophy for a second successive year since Jack Nicklaus in 1975 and 1976.

"I don't know if it is realistic to raise the bar in 2016 given what I have achieved in 2015 but I am sure it will be very close as I am always trying to get a little bit better," Spieth said.

"It would be good if I could repeat what I have accomplished this year next season but whether or not that happens, my goals for the new year will certainly include having multiple tournament wins.

"I would expect to at least win a major championship and it's exactly what Rory's [McIlroy] been saying, that even in an off-year you want to be at least close to winning a major."

With golf returning to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro next summer, after an exile lasting for over a century, Spieth said he is treating the event as a "fifth major".

"Just competing in the Olympics; just walking the opening ceremony, staying in the village, meeting these incredible athletes from around the world, hopefully that's something I'll be able to experience next August," Spieth added.

"Winning a gold medal has got to be up there now in my mind with winning a major championship. I've been asked the question: a green jacket or a gold medal, or a Wanamaker (trophy) or an Open Championship or a gold medal? That's not fair.

"I think this year we're going to approach it as a fifth major and we're going to prepare like it is and I'm going to go down there and try and take care of business."
