European Tour get tough on slow play

Participation in golf is considerably lower than it could be due to slow play, according to a study by the R&A.

The main topic of conversation in clubhouses these days is not whether fees are too high, buggies are burnt out or your socks don't meet your shorts during the summer months.

No, check into any 19th hole up and down the country and chances are slow play is what's getting members into the deepest of lathers.

So much so a conference will be held later this week on the subject with European Tour chief Keith Pelley already promising action... and quick.

Last week in Dubai he vowed to introduce 'a completely different philosophy on slow play', insisting it was a 'critical part of our game which needs to be addressed'.

Members of North Berwick Golf Club are desperate to find a solution to the problem which regularly sees rounds lasting five-and-a-half to six hours.
