Europe's 2014 Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley remembers Christy O’Connor Jnr who has died at the age of 67

Former Ryder Cup player and captain Paul McGinley has paid tribute to Christy O'Connor Jnr after the Irishman died suddenly, aged 67.

O'Connor, best remembered for beating Fred Couples in the 1989 Ryder Cup at The Belfry, passed away while reportedly on holiday in Tenerife, with McGinley believing the world of golf had lost one of its 'true characters, who would be sadly missed'.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, McGinley said: "Christy was the life and soul of the party who was full of stories and full of life.

"He was always in good form, always had a smile on his face and It made me proud, not just as a European but as an Irishman, to see him hit 'that' shot at the Belfry."
