The LPGA Coates Golf Championship second round in Florida has been suspended until Friday because of bad weather.

World number one Lydia Ko ended play having caught up to the lead, but she did not have enough time to finish the course at Golden Ocala before thunderstorms in the area halted play at 3.15pm US eastern time.

Ko, who is making her 2016 debut, was four-under par for her round and had a 15-foot birdie putt on her final hole at the par-four ninth hole, tying at seven under with Ha Na Jang.

Play will resume on Friday morning but the 72-hole tournament is scheduled to end on Saturday.

Jang, who opened with a 65, did not hit a shot on Thursday. She was ready to tee-off in the afternoon, but within an hour of play being stopped, several greens were already totally flooded.

Haru Nomura made seven birdies for a 66 and finished two rounds at six-under 136, while Michelle Wie was in a large group at four-under that included Suzann Pettersen, U.S. Women's Open champion In Gee Chun, Lexi Thompson and Juli Inkster.

But it was Ko - the 18-year-old New Zealander - who won the day and said: "I felt more comfortable. I was pretty pleased to see all my balls finish in the fairway.

"Last year was an awesome year - so much better than I ever expected. Things I only dreamt of happened.

"But you have to forget about it. It's a whole new year. Obviously, you come into the year with a bit of confidence, but you never know what's going to happen."
