James Morrison may not have been in contention for the BMW PGA Championship title, but he will be leaving Wentworth in a £100,000 car after a superb hole in one on the final day.
Morrison was fuming after finding a ditch at the 13th and running up a double-bogey six, but he staged the perfect response at the next as he struck a perfect five-iron to the 187-yard uphill 14th, and he was soon jumping for joy when he belatedly realised that his ball found the bottom of the cup.
"Having walked from the ditch on the last making double-bogey to hitting the best shot I've hit all week, and hit it straight down the flag," he said afterwards. "It's gone at it real speed. I gave my caddie a bit of an earful, I thought it gone over the green! But it went in and it's a great feeling.
"The crowd were amazing. It was one of those, where you were so far away, with the wind blowing, couldn't really tell. But I got the gist it had gone in, although someone said in the crowd it had not gone in. It was a bit hit and miss, but we were high-fiving, so it was lots of fun."
The magical blow earned the Englishman a stunning BMW i8, the same prize that Chris Wood won for his ace on the same hole on the final day at Wentworth last year.
Morrison's ace was the third of the tournament and the second of the final round after Rikard Karlberg launched an impressive charge up the leaderboard with a hole in one at the second.
The Swede went on to fire a superb 65 and set the early clubhouse target at eight under, but he did not win a prize for his blow at the second after Scott Jamieson picked up a BMW M2 for being the first man to make an ace in the event at the 10th on day two.
