Luke Donald has booked his place at next week's US Open at Oakmont after surviving a six-man play-off at a qualifying event in Ohio.

The former world No 1 was forced to return to Wedgewood Country Club early on Tuesday, after a rain delay prevented the players from staging the shoot-out on Monday evening.

The 38-year-old Englishman had posted rounds of 68 and 69, which left him in a tie-for-ninth alongside Jason Allred, Richard Schembechler, Daniel Summerhays, Patrick Rodgers and amateur Scottie Scheffler.

With only 13 spots available in Ohio, these six returned on Tuesday with Summerhays being the unlucky player to miss out.

Donald played two holes on Tuesday, making pars at both, while Summerhays was eliminated after missing a five-footer at the second extra hole.

"Mission accomplished!" Donald said on his Instagram account. "This piece of paper means a lot to me! Can't wait to get to Oakmont next week for the US Open.

"I've had to qualify the last 2 years for the US Open, haven't liked it, but somehow making it this way feels pretty damn rewarding."
