England's Mel Reid loses to Japan as partner Charley Hull is taken ill in Chicago

England's Mel Reid was forced to take on Japan's Haru Nomura and Mika Miyazato on her own in the fourballs at the UL International Crown in Chicago.

Playing partner Charley Hull, who she teamed up with to great effect on day one, was taken ill and unable to compete and Reid did remarkably well to take the match to the 18th, eventually losing out by one hole.

In the other match, Jodi Ewart Shadoff and Holly Clyburn halved with Ai Suzuki and Ayaka Watanabe to leave England top of Pool B on five points. Japan and Thailand share second on four points, with the USA propping up the pool with three.

Reid was never ahead but fought back from two down with an eagle and birdie at the 12th and 13th holes respectively to square the match.

However, Nomura birdied the 17th to put Japan back ahead and after the final hole was halved, it was enough to edge victory.

"I'm extremely proud of myself. You know, I've been struggling a little bit this year with a bit of game time," Reid told reporters. "To play the way I did today, I think we were six-under or something like that, so my aim was to shoot four-under.

"I thought, if I shot four-under I've got a pretty good chance to not be embarrassed. For me, it's a huge positive. To get anywhere near the 18th was going to be a huge achievement, and I am just really, really pleased I gave the team a huge chance of even a point."

The USA bounced back from being swept by England on Thursday by taking three points against Thailand.

Lexi Thompson and Cristie Kerr beat Porani Chutichai and Ariya Jutanugarn 4&3, while Stacy Lewis and Gerina Piller halved their match against Moriya Jutanugarn and Pornanong Phatlum.

In Pool A, Chinese Taipei lead with six points after a win and a loss against Korea, who second with four points.

Australia pick up three points with a win and a half against China and both countries have three points in the pool.
