Brandon Stone eagled his final hole to edge ahead of Charl Schwartzel at the halfway stage of the Alfred Dunhill Championship.
The South African rolled in from 10 feet to close a six-under 66 and move one-shot ahead of Chris Hanson and defending champion Schwartzel, who is looking for a fifth win at Leopard Creek CC.
Beginning the day tied for the lead with Paul Dunne, Schwartzel briefly moved three strokes clear after following four birdies over his opening 10 holes with a monster gain at the fourth and a 20-footer at the next.
Schwartzel then saw his lead cut to one when he found the water off the seventh tee and racked up a double-bogey, as George Coetzee posted a second-nine 29 to get to nine under.
Hanson briefly moved alongside Schwartzel with a seventh birdie of the day at the 14th, only to find the water and bogey the next on his way to a second successive 69.
Stone claimed top spot with a birdie-four at the 15th and a final-hole eagle, with Schwartzel and Hanson a shot back on 10 under.
"I felt like I played decent but actually made some really good putts," Schwartzel said. "I'm happy to be in the position, but feel I can give myself more opportunities if I fine tune things a bit going into the weekend."
Keith Horne threatened the lead late in the day after a run of four straight birdies, but a penultimate-hole blemish leaves him alongside Coetzee two off the pace.
A bogey-free 67 lifted Branden Grace inside the top-10, while Europe Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke missed the cut following a four-over 76.
