A flashback to the 2013 Phoenix Open, when local hero Phil Mickelson came agonisingly close to carding a 59.

Phil Mickelson returns to TPC Scottsdale for this week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open, four years on from going millimetres away from a history-making round.

We have already witnessed two rounds of 59 on the PGA Tour this season, the same score Mickelson came all-so close to achieving during the opening round of the 2013 tournament in Arizona.

Beginning on the back nine, Mickelson birdied his four holes and added a hat-trick of gains from the 16th on his way to reaching the turn in 29.

Mickelson drained a 20-footer at the first and picked up shots at the fourth and fifth, before going 11 under for the day with a birdie-two at the seventh.

A two-putt par from 20 feet at the eighth then left Mickelson needing to birdie the last to join an elite group to break 60 on the PGA Tour.

Mickelson found the par-four ninth green in two but landed his ball some 25 feet from the flag, but still came agonisingly close.
