Paul Waring moved top of the Joburg Open leaderboard before the second round was suspended due to bad light.
The Englishman, who has never previously won on the European Tour, was five under for the day with six holes to play when darkness saw play halted at 6.45pm local time (4.45pm GMT).
Waring holds a one-shot advantage over South African duo Dean Burmester and Darren Fichardt, who fired a six-under 66 on the East Course to set the clubhouse target at 11 under.
Defending champion Haydn Porteous sits three shots off the pace in a five-way tie for fifth also including England's Aaron Rai, with defending champion Paul Peterson a further two strokes back.
After Thursday's afternoon play was suspended due to a waterlogged course, overnight rain saw Friday's action delayed by another two hours and 45 minutes.
When the first round resumed at 9.30am, Fichardt birdied his final hole on the West Course to close an opening-round 66 before surging up the leaderboard with a front-nine 31 in his second.
Reaching the turn with a two-shot cushion, Fichardt carded his first blemish of the week at the par-four 10th but bounced back with a close-range gain at the last.
Waring made a fast start to his second round with back-to-back birdies on his first two holes, before a hat-trick of gains around the turn saw him leapfrog Fichardt and Burmester.
Burmester followed five gains in a six-hole stretch with a run of pars to stay one back with three to play, with compatriot Jacques Kruyswijk two behind on 10 under after a two-under 70.
A second successive bogey-free 67 leaves Porteous on nine under alongside Rai, Anton Karlsson, Stuart Manley and France's Romain Langasque.
Top seed Brandon Stone is six under for the round after 15 holes and four strokes back, while former Europe Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke will miss the cut following a second-round 73.
The second round will resume at 7am (5am GMT) on Saturday, where rain and thunderstorms are expected again.
