Bernd Wiesberger opened up a four-shot lead before storms brought an early finish to the second round of the Shenzhen International.
The Austrian fired a blemish-free 65 to set the clubhouse target at Genzon Golf Club, where play was suspended at 2.40pm local time due to a threat of lightning.
Thorbjorn Olesen and South Africa's Dylan Frittelli both posted matching 68s to share second spot, with Bubba Watson in the group a further stroke back having only completed five holes.
Play will resume at 6.30am on Saturday, with the third round set to be played in threeballs and off a two-tee start.
Nearly two hours of play was lost on Thursday to weather delays, with Wiesberger one of 54 players having to finish their opening round on Friday.
Beginning the day two strokes back, Wiesberger birdied his penultimate hole to complete a five-under 67 before making a fast start to his second round.
Starting on the back nine, Wiesberger followed back-to-back gains from the 13th with a birdie at the 17th to move alongside early pacesetter Thongchai Jaidee.
Wiesberger rolled in a 15-foot birdie at the first and drained a 30-footer at the fourth to move top of the leaderboard, adding further gains at the seventh and ninth to extend his cushion.
Frittelli had earlier briefly held the outright advantage after four birdies in a five-hole stretch around the turn, while Olesen mixed five gains with a sole blemish in another strong round.
The pair both head into the weekend on eight under, with Watson is joined by Richie Ramsay and Gregory Bourdy a further stroke back.
Jordan Smith and Scott Jamieson both sit six strokes back with 36 holes completed, while Tommy Fleetwood is level-par for his second round after holes.
