Charley Hull endured an agonising wait before eventually beating American Nelly Korda in the first round of the Lorena Ochoa Match Play in Mexico City.
The 21-year-old from Kettering was on the verge of victory after sinking a 30-yard putt on the 17th hole at one up, with Korda needing to make a 25-yard effort to take the tie to the 18th.
However, play was suspended due to bad light before the American could take her shot.
Almost two hours later, when conditions finally brightened, play resumed and Korda failed to make her putt, handing Hull a 2&1 victory, with Thailand's Pornanong Phatlum waiting in the second round.
Hull's fellow Brit Jodi Ewart Shadoff is out, however, after she was beaten one up by Angel Yin.
Ewart Shadoff needed to better Yin's score on the 18th to force an extra hole, having come back from three-down, but her tournament is over after both carded pars.
Elsewhere, there were wins for big guns Lydia Ko, Suzann Pettersen, Ariya Jutanugarn, Inbee Park and In Gee Chun.
