Patrick Reed leads Wells Fargo Championship by single shot after late birdies

Patrick Reed birdied his final two holes for a five-under-par 67 to surge into a one-shot lead after the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship.

With one round remaining at Eagle Point, the tournament remains wide open, with world No 1 Dustin Johnson in the hunt despite missing several chances to close the gap.

Reed struck a short iron into four feet on No. 17 and reached the 580-yard 18th hole in two for a two-putt birdie, giving him a one-shot lead over Alex Noren of Sweden and Spain's Jon Rahm.

"It was the calmest of three days and the scores are a lot lower, it seemed easier out there," said Reed. "I have just got keep on playing how I have been. Keep the ball in front of me, hit some greens and roll in some putts.

Noren missed a five-foot birdie putt on the last hole that would have tied Reed at eight-under 208.

Seventeen players were within four shots of the lead, a group which includes Phil Mickelson (69) and Johnson, who had a 67 despite missing a half-dozen chances from inside 15 feet on pure greens.
