Rory McIlroy is fed up with his poor form this season, according to Sky Sports pundit Paul McGinley.

McIlroy, who won The Open in 2014 at Hoylake, has struggled this year due to a number of factors, and heads into the week at Royal Birkdale having missed the cut at his last two tournaments, as well as the US Open last month.

"I think he's fed up," said McGinley. "It's been a very poor frustrating season for him so far and there's a number of reasons for that.

"He's missing confidence, he hasn't had a run and obviously there was a change of equipment. His injury has also been a big part of that as he hasn't gotten into the flow of the season.

Rory McIlroy says he has plenty of hunger to win a second Claret Jug despite missing the cut 3 times in his last 4 events before The Open.

"Also, he's not the new kid on the block anymore, there's a sense of responsibility on his shoulders as he moves into another phase in his career, and he's got to get his head around that as he moves forward.

"But he's got to get off to a good start. We look back and think he's always been a superstar, but he's always had a lot of ups and downs and this is a lull.

"But he does bounce and will bounce, but whether that's this week or not we don't know. The evidence suggests no after two missed cuts on links courses, but he will bounce at some stage, and we're all just waiting for that to happen."
