Nigel Mansell

British racing driver Mansell became good friends with a certain Greg Norman and through their relationship he received an invite to the Australian Open in 1988.

Mansell, who went on the win the Formula One World Championship in 1992, had a handicap of 1.9 - underlining his golfing ability - but his appearance at the Royal Sydney Club that year owed much to Norman's persuasion to the Australian Golf Union to offer a wildcard.

The publicity Mansell received put him under considerable pressure ahead of the tournament, but he managed to cope away from his comfort zone of a race track.

Mansell finished his first round with a birdie to card a respectable five-over 77, a mere two strokes poorer than Ian Woosnam. However, he was playing with a ruptured muscle in his left arm and struggled in his second round to 14-over 86.

Mansell didn't stop there - he went on to play at the 1989 Balearic Open, carding 87 and 82 and the South Australian Open, shooting 79 and 80.

Romo, who formally announced his retirement from NFL in April, attempted to qualify for the US Open in May but a three-over 75 wasn't good enough to progress past the the initial qualifying event to a further sectional qualifier.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback has always had a passion for golf even when he pursued his dream for a NFL career. Before his rookie season in 2003, Romo made his first attempt to qualify for the US Open before trying once again the following year.

In 2005, he fell just short after carding a three-under 69 as his NFL career was taking off. Each offseason Romo would play golf on a regular basis and consistent practice towards his passion appears to have paid off, as he continues to play in amateur competitions to this day.

"He's one of those gifted athletes that whatever he picks up, he can do," Woods said about Romo after playing with him at the 2012 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

The former two-time Grand Slam champion made his European Tour debut back in 2005 - only a year after retiring from professional tennis - at the Russian Open in Moscow.

However, after receiving a wildcard to compete, he carded dismal rounds of 88 and 96 to finish a full 40 strokes off the cut line.

Lendl won eight Grand Slams during his tennis career but has had a long lasting hunger to compete in golf. He once admitted to playing around 250 rounds in a year.

The Czech-born American attempted to qualify for the US Open in 2008 through the various local qualifying stages.

Lendl, a former world No 1. in tennis, carded his best round in a professional tournament at the 1999 Dominion Open with a 76.
