Solheim Cup: Who's in line to feature for Team Europe?
Saturday 5 August 2017 22:52, UK
As the Women's British Open heads into its final round we take a look at who is in line to feature in Team Europe at the Solheim Cup.
The 2017 Solheim Cup will be played at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club later this month, live on Sky Sports Golf, and Annika Sorenstam's European side is on the verge of being confirmed.
Current Standings
Sorenstam's squad will consist of the top four players on the Ladies European Tour Solheim Cup points rankings along with the top four LET members on the women's world rankings.
Georgia Hall, Florentyna Parker, Melissa Reid and Carlota Ciganda make up the four players who lead the points list.
Suzann Pettersen, Charley Hull, Karine Icher and Jodi Ewart Shadoff are the four names heading the world rankings.
The final remaining four positions in the 12-player squad will be filled by wildcards, announced by Sorenstam after the conclusion of Women's Open final round at Kingsbarns.
Who's in line for a wildcard pick?
Anna Nordqvist - The Swede has struggled through illness in recent months and after being forced to pull out of the Ladies Scottish Open last week she has fallen short of the required six ranking events.
However the 30-year-old, who is 12th in the world rankings, is likely to receive a captain's pick from her compatriot Sorenstam thanks to her valuable experience - she is aiming to appear in a fifth Solheim Cup.
Caroline Masson - Masson has surely played her way into the thoughts of Sorenstam. The German enjoyed a top-10 finish at the Scottish Open and has continued her resurgence in form this week at Kingsbarns to lie in a tie for seventh place after rounds of 69-72-67 for an eight-under total through the first three rounds.
The 28-year-old like Nordqvist is another with Solheim Cup experience having helped the Europeans to victory in 2013 and playing under defeated captain Carin Koch two years ago.
Caroline Hedwall - The five-time winner on the European Tour is well down on the LET standings in 64th position and outside the top 150 in the world rankings.
Hedwall, who has played in two LET tournaments all season, appears to thrive in the challenge of team golf and Sorenstam will have seen this first hand in 2013, as the vice-captain, when her Swedish compatriot was undefeated through her five matches.
Azahara Muñoz - The 29-year-old Spanish player shot a three-under 69 in Saturday's third round in Scotland which included a solitary blemish and will hope for for another solid showing in the final round.
Muñoz is ranked 79th in the world rankings and 12th in the LET standings but has featured in the three previous Solheim editions, albeit losing all three of her matches two years ago.
Catriona Matthew - The experienced 47-year-old from Scotland is assured of travelling to Iowa as a vice-captain but would love to compete in a playing capacity for a ninth time in the biennial tournament.
Matthew was a captain's pick two years ago but missed the cut at the Women's Open this week, in front of the watching Sorenstam, denting her hopes.
