Rory McIlroy lies seven shots off the lead after a second-round two-under 68 at The Northern Trust.
The four-time major winner, who opened with a three-over 73 to fall nine off the early pace, mixed three birdies with one bogey on Friday to finish at one-over par just inside the cut mark at Glen Oaks Club.
McIlroy, who is the defending FedEx Cup champion, revealed earlier this week that he will commit to playing in the series of FedEx Cup play-off events before ending his season in the Dunhill Links in Scotland.
The world No 4, who has continued to play despite an ongoing rib injury, made a birdie at the par-three second from off the green to gain some early momentum.
The 28-year-old, who has not won this year, something which last happened in 2008, then made 10 successive pars before gaining another stroke at the par-five 13th only to give that shot back at the following hole.
McIlroy then made another birdie at the par-four 16th before holing out from off the green at the par-three 17th for a save before closing with another par to leave himself chasing the leaders over the weekend.
