Rory McIlroy returns to a familiar hunting ground at this week’s Deutsche Bank Championship, a year on from a season-changing victory at TPC Boston.

The reigning FedExCup champion ended a 16-month winless run on the PGA Tour with a two-shot triumph, his second in the tournament's history and the first of two victories in the 2016 play-offs.

The Northern Irishman recovered from carding a three-putt bogey and an ugly triple-bogey seven over his first three holes to post a level-par 71, leaving him six strokes off the early lead.

A much-improved putting display saw McIlroy shoot 67 on Saturday and the four-time major champion lipped-out for eagle on the final round of his third round 66, but still was six back heading into the final day.

McIlroy piled the pressure on 54-hole leader Paul Casey with a front-nine 31 on Monday, before moving ahead with a birdie-three at the 12th.

The-then world No 5 then bounced back from a penultimate-hole bogey by tapping in for birdie at the last to close a final-round 65, setting the clubhouse target at 15 under, which nobody matched.

McIlroy would go on to win the season-ending Tour Championship three weeks later, ensuring he would top the FedExCup standings and secure the $10m bonus prize.
