Anirban Lahiri receives a hole disqualification for a practice bunker shot during a fourballs match at the Presidents Cup.

The International team suffered a challenging opening day at the Presidents Cup and their fortunes weren’t about to change on Friday when Anirban Lahiri was disqualified for a hole during his fourballs encounter.

The Indian golfer, playing alongside Charl Schwartzel, was penalised for taking a practice stroke from the bunker after the International side had conceded the hole to their American opponents on the second hole at Liberty National GC.

At the Presidents Cup, practising a putt after a hole is completed is permitted, but that is not the case with bunker shots in the biennial match play event.

With the second hole already finished Lahiri's punishment was to forfeit his participation in the third hole in New Jersey against the rookie Team USA pairing of Charley Hoffman and Kevin Chappell.

Despite leaving his South African playing partner to battle on his own Schwartzel managed to card a par four and secure the half to remain two down through the opening three holes of the match.
