Sergio Garcia is hoping to build on a special 2017 as he returns to defend his Dubai Desert Classic title this week.

The world No 9 claimed a three-shot win over Henrik Stenson in last year's event at Emirates Golf Club, the first of three victories in a year which saw Garcia win a maiden major title at Augusta.

Garcia got his 2018 off to the perfect start by claiming a five-shot win at last week's Singapore Open, with the Spaniard targeting further success over the year ahead.

"The goals are still the same," Garcia told the media on Wednesday. "I'm trying to keep improving and keep getting better in all aspects of the game, just like I try to do every year.

"Obviously I'll try to put myself in winning situations like I did last week and try to cope with them the best way possible and give myself chances at winning tournaments.

"I don't know if it's going to be one, six, two, three (wins) or what's going to happen, but at least if I feel like I'm getting better and I keep putting myself in that situation, that's already an achievement."

Garcia has been paired alongside 2007 champion Stenson and two-time Dubai winner Rory McIlroy for the first two rounds, with the 38-year-old relishing the chance to try and replicate last year's winning performance.

"It's obviously great to be back here in Dubai defending our title," Garcia added. "I think that every week we come out and we try to do our best, play the best we can every single week, and that's the same thing I'm going to do this week.

"It's not like every time that every guy that won here has won the Masters, or for that matter a Major, throughout that year. I guess it's just a coincidence it happened last year and the year before. But you know, neither Danny (Willett) or I are going to complain about it for sure.

"Winning here against Henrik (Stenson), with Henrik playing well, and myself playing well, and kind of keeping him off my back throughout the whole day, was the most important thing mentally. That helped me a lot and gave me more confidence as I went on through the year."
