Johnson posted a two-under 70 at Pebble Beach to retain his overnight advantage and join Potter on 14 under, who threated a '59 round' at Monterey Peninsula on his way to a birdie-filled 62.

Troy Merritt briefly topped the leaderboard but bogeyed four of his final six holes to join Jason Day two off the pace, with Jon Rahm part of a three-way tie for fifth after birdieing his final three holes at Spyglass Hill.

McIlroy followed Friday's erratic 74 with a level-par 72 at Pebble Beach to miss the cut by two strokes, despite recovering from finding the water off the 18th tee to almost hole out for eagle on his way to a closing birdie.

Starting the day tied for the lead with Beau Hossler, Johnson moved ahead with a six-foot eagle at the second and cancelled out a long-range three-putt at the third with a kick-in gain at the next.

The two-time Pebble Beach champion posted a two-putt birdie at the sixth and drained a 25-footer at the par-three seventh to move three clear, as Potter moved up the leaderboard by reaching the turn in 30 and holing a long-range birdie from off the first green.

The world No 1 failed to get up-and-down from a greenside bunker to save par at the 10th, allowing Potter to grab a share of the advantage when he added gains at the second and fourth to go 10 under for his round.

Johnson missed from 12 feet to save par at the 12th and Potter briefly moved two clear with an eight-foot gain at the sixth, only for the world No 246 to miss out on a sub-60 round by finishing with back-to-back bogeys.

Merritt followed a first-nine 33 with successive birdies from the second to temporarily go two clear, as Johnson bounced back from a bogey at the 17th to hole a 10-footer at the last and join Potter on 14 under.

Ted Potter Jr. said he wasn't thinking about shooting a sub-60 round on his way to a birdie-filled 62.

A bogey at the fourth from Merritt was followed by three in a row from the sixth to see him close a two-under 69 at Monterey Peninsula, leaving him alongside Day on 12 under.

Rahm is joined by Steve Stricker and Patrick Rodgers three strokes back, with Phil Mickelson three-putting the last to drop to nine under and Jordan Spieth seven back after a two-under 70.
