Dustin Johnson goes inches away from a hole-in-one during the opening round of the WGC-Mexico Championship

Dustin Johnson narrowly missed out on firing a hole-in-one after a moment of brilliance during the opening round of the WGC-Mexico Championship.

The defending champion, who finished a shot clear of Tommy Fleetwood in 2017, had an eventful start when he followed back-to-back birdies from the 12th with an ugly double-bogey at the 14th.

Johnson bounced back with an eight-foot gain at the par-five next, only to bogey the 16th and drop himself back to level-par as he made his way to the par-three 17th.

The world No 1 then produced the perfect tee-shot over the water on the 158-yard hole, watching his effort find the green and spin back before narrowly stopping a fraction short of the target.
