The pair both carded three-under 69s at Mission Hills Country Club to sit in a six-way tie for third place on 10 under after 54 holes, four behind leader Pernilla Lindberg.

Hull, 22, made a solid start with three birdies on the front nine and had the lead in her sights after posting back-to-back birdies at the 11th and 12th, before slipping back with bogeys at the 13th and 17th.

Ewart Shadoff, 30, who started alongside Hull on seven under and five off the pace, was quick out of the blocks with an eagle at the second followed by a birdie at the third, but came unstuck with a double-bogey six at the seventh.

She recovered with birdies at the ninth and 11th before bogeying the 12th, but a confident gain at the 18th put her back alongside her compatriot.

World No 95 Lindberg is in new territory as she bids to win her first career title in her 250th tournament appearance.

The 31-year-old Swede mixed four birdies with two bogeys in her two-under 70 as she finished on 14-under 202, a tournament record score after 54 holes.

The highlight of her round came at the final hole as she hit a superb approach shot to four feet and confidently drained the putt to open up a three-shot cushion ahead of Sunday's final round.

Sung Hyun Park, last year's US Women's Open champion, held a two-shot lead when she moved to 15 under thanks to her fourth birdie of the day at the 11th.

But, possibly in response to her and Lindberg being placed on the clock, she then started to struggle badly with back-to-back bogeys on the 12th and 13th followed by a double-bogey at the 15th and a bogey at the 16th.

That left the South Korean with a two-over 74 and dropped her back alongside Hull and Ewart Shadoff on 10 under.

Inbee Park of South Korea (67), the 2013 champion, American Jennifer Song (68) and Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand (66) are also handily-placed on 10 under.

American Amy Olson holds second place outright on 11 under after holing a lengthy birdie putt at the 18th for a four-under 68.
