Brooks Koepka holes out for rare albatross on final day at Sawgrass

during the third round of the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club on May 5, 2018 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Brooks Koepka set the pulses racing early on the final day of The Players Championship as he equalled the course record of 63 and made a sensational albatross at the 16th.

Last year, Rafa Cabrera Bello made the first two at the 16th since the tournament moved to the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in 1982, and Koepka made it two with one perfect swing of a six-iron from 208 yards.

Rafa Cabrera Bello hit the first albatross on the 16th in Sawgrass history last year

His ball pitched a few feet short of the flag and hopped straight into the cup on the second bounce, and Koepka then birdied 17 to leave him needing another at the last to own the outright course record.

But his 12-foot putt shaved the edge of the hole and he had to settle for a flawless nine-under 63 which gave him the early clubhouse lead on 11 under, holing out at 18 just over an hour before runaway leader Webb Simpson teed off.

Brooks Koepka says it was pretty special to hit an albatross on the 16th at Sawgrass during his final round.

Reflecting on his albatross, Koepka said: "It was just three-quarter six-iron and we thought it was perfect. I was aiming 15 feet left and just kind of faded with the wind right on line and to have it one-hop in is pretty cool."
