Added to the five he collected on Thursday, Gonzalez moved level with compatriot Brendan Steele who also has 26 points at the half-way stage.

Using a modified Stableford points system, Gonzalez needed just 62 strokes for his round at the picturesque Montreux Golf and Country Club.

The Washington-born golfer had teed off in a tie-for-53rd but raced up the leaderboard despite starting his day with a bogey-five on the 10th.

PGA Tour Golf

Gonzalez, who currently stands 115th in the FedEx Cup standings, has never won on the PGA Tour and in 25 starts this season has posted a brace of top-10s.

And he paid tribute to his caddie at the end of the round, saying: "I wouldn't have been able to do it without Brandon DeStefano.

“He did a lot of number figuring here. Playing at altitude here in Reno, early in the morning the yardage can play a little bit less and then get to the afternoon and it can play a little bit more.

“I went off what he said and hit a lot of good putts today."

Steele, who holed out from a greenside bunker for his eagle on the par-five second hole, added: "It's golf so you never know what's going to happen.

“But I feel like my game is in a really good spot. I was happy with how I played last week until Sunday.”

The pair stand two points clear of another American JJ Henry and Swede Jonas Blixt.

Overnight leader Zach Sucher is five points adrift, and in a tie-for-seventh, after adding just three points to his first round tally of 18.

Sucher had an uneventful opening 11 holes, before experiencing a topsy-turvy final seven that included three birdies and four bogeys.

Points system: Albatross -8pts; Eagle - 5; Birdie - 2; Par - 0; Bogey -1; Double bogey or higher -3.
