As long-time leader Gary Woodland faltered on the final day in Mexico, Perez stormed to the turn in 31 and held his nerve down the stretch to card a composed 67 for a winning score of 21 under par.

Perez, making only his third start since returning to competition after eight months out of the game following shoulder surgery, raced out of the blocks with three birdies over the first four holes to move four ahead of Woodland, who bogeyed the first and third.

The pair traded birdies at the seventh, and Perez extended his advantage with another at the eighth before Woodland reduced the deficit with a confident putt for a three at the 11th.

Perez opened the door further when he dropped his first shot of the day at the next, but Woodland was unable to take advantage and lost further ground when he missed from six feet to save par at the 16th.

The 40-year-old Perez was content to grind out the pars and, although Woodland rallied with birdies at each of the final two holes, Perez's cast-iron four at the last sealed a comfortable win.

Woodland's valiant finish earned him outright second on 19 under ahead of Russell Knox, who mixed seven birdies with two bogeys in a five-under 67.

Scott Piercy remained in contention for the title with four birdies in six holes on the front nine, but an erratic final six holes ended his chances and a double-bogey six at the last added up to a disappointing 70 and dropped him into a share of fourth with Kevin Streelman and Chez Reavie.

Knox's fellow Scot Martin Laird laboured to a 70 to finish eight adrift of Perez, while defending champion Graeme McDowell fired a 68 to finish on 11 under par.
