Playing partners Jason Day and Sangmoon Bae posted seven-under 63s to take a share of the lead heading into the final round of The Barclays.
On another day of low scoring at Plainfield Country Club, Day and Bae both moved to 11 under for the week and one clear of nearest challenger Bubba Watson, with just four strokes separating the top ten.
Zach Johnson and Ryan Palmer briefly held the outright lead at ten under, only for Bae to move ahead by following a 30-foot birdie at the 15th with a close-range putt at the next to card a third consecutive gain on the back nine.
Day responded immediately by holing a 20-foot putt to eagle the par-five 16th, only for the pair to drop a shot at the next after failing to save par from eight feet.
Those blemishes gave Johnson a chance to move back top of the leaderboard, but the Open champion left a long putt at the 14th short as Day and Bae both picked up a shot at the last.
"We were driving off each other," Day told Sky Sports 4. "He got off to a good start at the first hole and was hitting a lot of fairways and greens, and I was doing the same.
"I was just trying to keep pace with him and then got a little hot with the eagle at 16. I think I've just got to be patient with myself and I will fight as hard as I can."
Johnson two-putted from ten feet to par the 16th before dropping a shot at the last to finish two off the pace alongside Palmer and Henrik Stenson, who was unable to convert a number of birdie chances on the back nine.
Overnight leader Watson almost made it a three-way tie for the lead when he pitched from the rough at the 18th to within eight feet of the pin, but the world No 4 saw his birdie putt slide right of the cup to close a three-under 67.
The lowest round of the day came from world No 181 Carlos Oritz, with the Mexican surging in to a tie for seventh after posting an eight-under 62 as one of the early starters.
"It was calm this morning so I knew there were birdies out there, particularly on the back nine," Oritz told Sky Sports 4. "I played great for the first 12 holes and then I struggled a little bit and missed a couple of greens.
"I got it up and down and holed a bunker shot on 16 and finished with a birdie on 18 so I'm pretty pleased with my round."
Oritz lies in the group that includes Jason Dufner and Kevin Kisner, with Justin Rose recovering from a slow start to the week to move within six shots of the lead after a birdie-filled 63.
First round joint-leaders Tony Finau and Camilo Villegas are tied with Rose and Hideki Matsuyama on five under, with Dustin Johnson a further two strokes back after a three-under 67 - his lowest round of the week.
