Jodi Ewart Shadoff makes the worst possible start to the Saturday foursomes by sending Europe's opening tee shot in to the water

First tee nerves can afflict professional golfers as well as amateurs, particularly in the highly-charged atmosphere of a Solheim Cup, and Jodi Ewart Shadoff gave a prime example of what pressure can do in Iowa.

With Europe trailing by three points overnight following Friday afternoon's fourballs whitewash and needing a strong, confidence-building start to the second day, Ewart Shadoff had the honour of striking the first tee shot of the morning foursomes.

The English star decided to hammer a driver away at the short par-four opener in the hope of finding the green, or at least leaving playing-partner Caroline Masson with an easy pitch to set up a birdie chance, but her plans floundered as she blocked it way right.

So far right, in fact, that her ball bounded off the wide fairway and into a creek which few knew was there on the opening day, but Lexi Thompson made no mistake with her tee shot as the Europeans again found themselves up against it.

Ewart Shadoff did atone for her error when she drained a 30-foot putt to salvage an unlikely par, but Thompson stepped up to convert Cristie Kerr's pitch to eight feet and continue Team USA's momentum.
